What Is Male Breast Reduction?

Male breast reduction is a surgical option for men who wish to reduce or eliminate excess fatty or glandular tissue that causes overdeveloped breasts.

At some point in their lives, many men develop gynecomastia, a condition that is characterized by the development of excessive breast tissue. Although it's often temporary, especially in adolescents, the condition can cause a great deal of emotional distress. Gynecomastia may be caused by hormonal changes, medical conditions, obesity, and certain medications. Your Male Breast Reduction

If the breasts are composed of mostly fat, liposuction alone may be sufficient. This can be administered under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Once you are anesthetized, Dr. Tierney makes several small incisions on your chest. He then inserts a thin tube, called a cannula, to break up and suction fat away. Due to their small size, liposuction incisions typically heal to very discreet scars.

If Dr. Tierney determines that your gynecomastia is due to excessive glandular tissue, surgical excision may be necessary. During this approach, performed while you are under general anesthesia, Dr. Tierney makes an incision around the areola, called a periareolar incision. Through this incision, he removes the glandular tissue as well as any excess fat, if necessary. He may also remove excess skin for a smoother contour. Finally, after evaluating the chest for symmetry, he closes the incisions.

After surgery, residual anesthesia and pain medication may make you feel groggy and "out of it." Most patients spend a day or so resting in bed, moving around a few times a day to prevent blood clots. Swelling and soreness are normal, and you will likely have a compression garment in place to minimize these symptoms and support your chest as it heals. Most patients feel well enough to get back to work after a week or so, and the remaining bandages or support garment are easily hidden under clothing. Dr. Tierney advises his male breast reduction patients to refrain from intimacy and strenuous exercise, especially that which involves the upper body, for several weeks in order to allow the chest to heal undisturbed.
