In His Own Words: Q&A With Dr. Tierney
Q: What first attracted you to plastic surgery?A: I knew that I wanted to do a surgical speciality. I enjoyed working with my hands and seeing immediate results. Plastic surgery is a speciality with a wide variety of procedures. You work on areas of the body from head to toe. You also work on patients of various ages, from newborns to the elderly.
Q: What's your favorite part about the work?A: I enjoy operating most of all. It is challenging and rewarding to come up with a plan to correct a problem or improve the look of someone and then proceed with that plan successfully.
Q: What would you be doing if you weren't a surgeon?A: If I weren't a plastic surgeon, I would probably go into veterinary medicine. Working with animals would be very rewarding.
Q: What brought you to Tennessee, and why did you decide to stay?A: Prior to being in Tennessee, I was an Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Louisville, about 3 hours north of Nashville. At the time, my brother was in Nashville and I would visit the city often. A job opportunity became available in Nashville, and my fiancèe and I moved here. Within 2 months, we were married. I've been in private practice since then, and both of my kids were born here. It's a great city and a great place to raise a family.
Q: What developing technologies or techniques are most exciting to you?A: To me, the most exciting technologies are the noninvasive ones, such as skin tightening and vaginal rejuvenation options with ThermiTight® and ThermiVa®. Every day there seems to be a new filler or a better product available to improve people's appearances or correct deformities.
